How do you read through a Hull ID Range?

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a twelve- or 14-character serial selection that uniquely identifies a boat. The HIN is analogous to some VIN on a car.

The first three digits are the Manufacturer’s Identification Code (ex. Boat brand name such as Sea Ray, Meridian, and many others.). The four digits after that are the maker’s serial amount with the boat. The 3rd and 4th digits through the close will be the date of manufacture. The letter to the day of your manufacture corresponds towards the month in the 12 months, i.e. A = January, B = February, C = March and so on. The final two digits on the HIN range represent the model calendar year.

All boats manufactured or imported on or right after November 1, 1972, need to bear a HIN, which HIN needs to be determined during boat registration. Vessels created or imported ahead of 1972 are EXEMPT as they generally do not need a HIN.

The HIN is observed over a steel or plastic plate, usually over the transom on the boat, commonly on the best starboard (correct) side of your transom within just two inches of the top of transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is most affordable.
